A CORINTHIAN BLACK-FIGURED HEAD-PYXIS
attributed to the severeanu painter
circa 570-560 b.c.
Embellished with three identical mold-made female protomai which project from the shoulders and join to the rim, each wearing a red garment, a necklace and a fillet adorned with zigzag, with three panels on the shoulders between the ladies each with a bird either between two sirens (two panels) or between two spinxes, the body zone with a bird between two sirens and two lions, a bird between two sphinxes, a bird between two sphinxes and two lions, and a single siren with outstretched wings; with rays above the foot, a band of zigzag below the body zone and on the side and top of the mouth, and a double row of dots below the shoulder zone; details in added red throughout
