Lot Essay

The artist's second wife, Marthe Hoschede Butler, is seated in the center of the painting. James and Lili, Butler's son and daughter by his first wife, Suzanne Hoschede Butler, are seated at left and right. Both Marthe and Suzanne Hoschede were stepdaughters of Claude Monet.
