Lot Essay

The folio-cabinet formed part of library furniture commissioned around l860 by Alexander Perceval for his Italianate villa at Temple House, Co. Sligo. Designed in the mid-l9th Century Italianate manner with patteraed frieze and guttae-enriched pilasters, it is further enriched in the French manner with ribbon-banded tablets, whose corners are fretted after the Grecian fashion. It was executed by the Bond Street firm of Messrs. Johnstone and Jeanes, whose work in the Italian style was displayed at the London l85l International Exhibition and received praise for its chaste decoration.
