Lot Essay

This set of candelabra, known as the 'Classical Family' model are almost identical to a pair of 'girandoles' in the Collection of the Anglo-American Art Museum, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, U.S.A. (H. Parrott Bacot, Nineteenth Century Lighting, West Chester, Pennsylvania, 1987, p. 196, no. 275). There exist several design variations for the figural group besides the present model, ranging from the simple 'Lady and Gentleman' model to the complex 'Capture of Major Andre' example. They were manufactured by several New England companies, the largest of which was Cornelius & Co. of Philadelphia. Other examples were also made by their rivals, Archer and Warner.
