Lot Essay

Sittings for this portrait are recorded on 13 and 14 March 1783. A pendant portrait of Mr. Cross, for which sittings are recorded on 14 and 15 March 1783, was sold at Christie's, London, 1 June 1934, lot 34. A smaller replica of the latter portrait is in the collection of the Yale Center for British Art (no. B1981.25.538).
