Lot Essay

The sitter was the only daughter of Pryse Campbell, of Stackpole Court, Pembrokeshire, who was Member of Parliament for Nairnshire, and Sarah, daughter and co-heir of Sir Edmund Bacon, Bt., and the grandaughter of John Campbell of Cawdor Castle. Her brother John was created 1st Baron Cawdor in 1796. She married Thomas Wodehouse, a barrister, the brother of Lord Wodehouse, in 1782.

This portrait, painted circa 1772, will be included in Dr. David Mannings forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work as no. 1221.
