Lot Essay

Nineteenth Century gaming rooms appear to have held a particular fascination for Pidding, and he exhibited Interior of a Gaming House, 1833, and The Draft Players, 1834, at the British Institution. In circa 1860 he also attempted to make a sensation with a larger painting of The Gaming Rooms at Homburg. Homburg, a town in the province of Hesse-Nassau, Prussia, was noted for its gaming-tables from the early 1840s until they were closed down in 1872.
