Lot Essay

Strutt left England in the early 1830s and travelled abroad, visiting Austria, Switzerland and Italy, before finally returning home in 1851. It was while in Rome that he sent The Ancient Forum, Rome (1845) and Tasso's Oak, Rome (1851) back to London to be exhibited at the Royal Academy.
