Lot Essay

In the 1580's it appears that there was a small atelier creating dishes with scrolling grounds. The present dish typifies this style with its broad outlining of the major motifs. Two closely related dishes are in the Musée de la Renaissance, Chäteau d'Ecouen. (Atasoy, N. and Raby, J.: Iznik, The Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989 pls.495 and 496, pp.248-9). Both have the same narrow interlace border seen here; the first also has the groups of three red dots worked without an outline seen in the saz leaves on this dish.
