Lot Essay

These impressive chenets are based on the celebrated model, probably designed by Jacques Gondoin, dessinateur des mobilier de la Couronne, of which examples were supplied by the bronzier Claude-Jean Pitoin to M.de Fontanieu in 1777 and to Marie Antoinette in 1779. A pair of this model in the Louvre is illustrated in P.Verlet, Les Bronzes Dorés François de XVIIIe Siécle, Paris, 1987, p.284, figs 317-9
