Lot Essay

Joseph Kochly, maître in 1783

This impressive commode, of striking architectural form with fluted column uprights framing panels of richly figured acajou moucheté, and with finely chased, jewel-like mounts, is one of the grandest works recorded by this little-known ébéniste, who was based in the cour Saint-Joseph, rue de Charonne. Its architectural design relates to a commode à vantaux with similarly panelled sides and fluted uprights by Jean-Jacques Pafrat, sold in these Rooms from the collection of Alexander and Berendt, 10 June 1993, lot 59.
