Lot Essay

The candelabra branches, which are guarded by Apollo's sacred griffin, emerge from a 'tripod' scrolled stem supported on a stepped altar base, flowered with bacchic thyrsae, and embellished with dolphin trusses and shell badges displayed on scale imbrications that recall Venus.

The ornament is in the style of the Roman candelabra patterns issued by Jacob Petit in his Collection de Dessins d'Ornament, published in the late 1820s.
