拍場告示
Please note that the dimensions should read 251 x 411 mm., and that the sheet is additionally signed and inscribed 'G. dú Jardijn . 1. gl.' (verso). The drawing bears the following additional provenance:
H. Lempertz Sen. (L. 1337).
Marijn Schapelhouman has kindly pointed out that this drawing is by Guilliam du Gardijn (circa 1597 - after 1647), relating it to seven sheets in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which bear similar inscriptions formerly associated with Karel Dujardin, M. Schapelhouman and P. Schatborn, Dutch drawings of the Seventeenth Century in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Amsterdam and London, 1998, nos. 111-117, illustrated. In the light of this, the inscription on the recto should be read as 'G. du Jardijn' (partly cut) and not as stated in the catalogue. This sheet bears the price code '1. gl.' (for 1 guilder) on the verso, and possibly another on the recto (erased), similar to those on four sheets in Amsterdam which Schapelhouman relates to price codes either from a liber veritatis or a catalogue of models for finished sheets, M. Schapelhouman and P. Schatborn, op. cit., nos. 112-114 and 116. The watermark on the present sheet, a kneeling figure in a cartouche (similar to Briquet 7628) is also found on a sheet in Amsterdam which carries two Roman compositions and measures 410 x 552 mm., suggesting that our drawing is half a similar sketchbok sheet, M. Schapelhouman and P. Schatborn, op. cit., no. 112.
The composition on the verso depicts the Milvian bridge.
