Marcel Schulman dates this drawing to 1862, op. cit., p. 305. By restricting his use of line to the tree trunks, Rousseau creates an atmosphere of wind and movement in the foliage. This effective revision of his Barbizon-inspired landscape technique is seen quite seldom in Rousseau's oeuvre.
