Sir Denis Mahon has kindly confirmed this attribution to Guercino. This sheet may be connected to a lost altarpiece commissioned for the church at Castel Franco in Emilia, for which the initial payment of 52½ scudi was made on 29 March 1632, with the final payment of 67 scudi on 28 June 1633, B. Ghelfi and Sir Denis Mahon eds., Il libro dei conti del Guercino, Venice, 1997, p. 65, no. 48 and p. 71, no. 76.
