Vanvitelli was nicknamed 'Gasparo dagli Occhiali' by the Romans owing to the spectacles he wore to execute his veduti. Rather more obliquely, he was known to the Schildersbent, the Dutch and Flemish artistic community in Rome, as 'Piktoorts', or Pitch-Torch.
