A short notice on the verso of the mount gives a details of the sitter: 'Paul Goion, protonotaire apostolique. né à Fontenay-le-Comte en 1549, mort à Rome le 18 Juin 1627 - (il etait fils de Guillaume Goion écuyer, Sr. de la Pigalle de Fontenay) Paul Goion a fait imprimer à Rome en 1603 un commentaire anonyme sur Tacite, et en 1616 un mémoire sur les ancient théâtres d'Italie [...] Il a laissé aussi quelques ouvrages concernant l'architecture et les bains de Titus (ext. des notes de G. Linley écrites à Rome en 1639.)'.
