Lot Essay

The 1774 catalogue of part of the stock in trade of Mr. James Giles sold by Mr. Christie records two pairs of decanters and stoppers of similar description to the present pair: on the first day's sale, Monday, March 21, 1774, lot 29 'two cut decanters (enamel'd) mosaick work very rich, .......', and on the second day's sale, Tuesday, March 22, 1774, lot 37 'two glass decanters cut enamel'd mosaic very rich, .........'. Whilst no comparable decanters appear to be recorded in the literature, for other facet-cut wares also gilt in a 'mosaick' pattern see Gerald Coke, In Search of James Giles (1718-1780), (1983), p. 243, pl. 71, (a) and (b) for a pair of green scent bottles and stoppers and a cream basin, cover and stand, and p. 240, pl. 68 (b) for a white scent flask.
