Los Caprichos
etchings with burnished aquatint, drypoint and engraving, 1799, the complete set of 80, lacking the title page, from the Fifth Edition of 210 copies (but with the scratch on plate 75, and one of the scratches on plate 19 indicative of the Sixth Edition), printed by the Calcographia for the Real Academia between 1881 and 1886, on stout, card-like wove, with margins, good impressions, bound at the top sheet edge, in cream pasteboard covers with the Self-portrait (H. 36) on the front, in generally good condition, light-staining at the sheet edges, minor creasing and short tears to the left and lower sheet edges of plate 17 (backed with paper tape at the lower sheet edge verso), plate 18 with creases at the right, left and lower sheet edges, with a crease and short split in the upper margin (backed with paper tape at the upper and left sheet edges verso), plate 44 with minor paper loss at the lower left sheet corner, each plate with the title inscribed in pencil in the lower margin, minor foxing and other defects elsewhere, the fly-leaves and end-papers loose, the cover worn and rubbed, the colour darkened, scratches and abrasions to the Self-portrait, in a modern linen-covered solander box with the artist's name on the spine(album)
