Lot Essay

In a clever twist on his famed 'Museum' series of large-scale colour photographs of visitors viewing masterpieces of Western art in the most important museums across the globe, Thomas Struth portrays in 'Gerhard Richter - Madrid, 1994' the acclaimed German painter in his own exhibition. The exhibition depicted here is the fourth and final venue of Richter's comprehensive retrospective, which began in the fall of 1993 at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, continued on in the winter of 1993 at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Bonn, in the spring of 1994 at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and ended in the summer of 1994 at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.
