Lot Essay

"The structure of Flavin's works lies in the way the tubes, in their fittings, are ordered; …the use of light makes the structure dissolve and gives the colours an unlimited diffusion. The overlapping of different colours and coloured shadows creates new colours.
"With his habits of dedicating his otherwise neutral works to people he thinks highly of, Flavin, in contrast to Judd and Lewitt, introduces a moment of extreme subjectivity." (C. Sauer, 'Dan Flavin', in 'Minimal Art', Brussels 1998, pp.81-82.)
