In 1892 Gérôme exhibited a life size group in marble of Pygmalion with the statue of Galatea coming to life. It was probably from this sculpture that Gérôme was inspired to create a series of pictures of Pygmalion and Galatea seen from different angles.

The prime version of Galatea seen from behind is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (see Ackerman, op. cit., no. 385).
