The frosted gilt gut fusee movement with engraved tapered square pillars, floral engraved rim to the top plate, the remains of a silver cock chased and engraved with a floral design, steel worm set-up lacking a pointer, the gear train restored, the overall chased and engraved dial with floral decoration, Roman chapter ring with inner quarter hour ring and half hour divisions, the remains of blued steel hand, the case with overall floral and scrolled design, the front cover depicting the Adoration of the Magi, the back cover depicting the Presentation to the Temple Elders, with square seven piece hinge, turned finial, movement signed; with restorations

Lot Essay

The movement can be dated to approximately 1625 and the case to approximately 1640. As the dial is in the same style as the case and fits the movement it can probably be assumed that the movement was cased up at a later date. The remains of the stud under the foot of the cock are still there, but have been drilled through to take the present screw and the worm set-up would have been added at a date later than the original mechanism.
