The present work is 'one of a series of paintings representing La Giuseppina or La Carolina resting on a narrow bed with sloping wooden headboard ... All these paintings show the model fully clothed. In his letter to Blanche detailing his method of painting in rotation, Sickert had remarked that he was currently painting 'une femme couchée et bien peinte avec l'huile - j'en viens de conter quarante toiles en route' ... Sickert's mention of 40 pictures created en route to the realisation of his current femme couchée, is a reminder of how prolific he was during this period in Venice'. (W. Baron, Sickert Paintings, Royal Academy Exhibition Catalogue, 1992, p.142).
