Lot Essay
The rosewood pier-glass mirror, which is wreathed by an ebony ribbon band and inlaid in the French/antique manner with ivy leaves or 'heartseed' vine, was supplied for the Drawing-Room at Raith by George Bullock, as part of a 'pier-set' and accompanied a 'console cabinet' displaying a Mona marble top. The 'pier-set' was listed in the 'Drawing Room' in the 1895 Inventory of the Mansion House of Raith, Kirkcaldy (p. 46) as a 'Rosewood & brass inlaid console cabinet, serpentine marble top, with large mirror above, plate 70" x 50"'.
The same brass-inlaid 'ribbon band' appears on a pair of cabinets made by Bullock for the 9th Earl and 1st Marquess of Abercorn (d. 1818) in 1817 (see C. Wainwright et al., George Bullock: Cabinet-maker, London, 1988, cat. no. 23 and J. O'Brien and D. Guinness, Great Irish Houses and Castles, London, 1992, p. 206).
