Each made up of two sets of twelve hand-coloured finely engraved gores and two polar calottes, the terrestrial NEWTON'S NEW TERRESTRIAL GLOBE COMPILED FROM THE MOST RECENT AUTHENTIC SURVEY OF BRITISH AND FOREIGN NAVIGATORS & TRAVELLERS. Euston Squ., the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils, the Meridian of London ungraduated, the latitude graduations at 30°W, the oceans with an analemma and showing the antipodes of London and various notes including Nimrod's Group Capt Eilbach 1827, Islands seen 1825, Land seen by Cap.t Michel, Reef, New Reef, Breakers, Clerk's Rocks, Rocks 1821, French Rocks, Ball's Pyramid and numerous others, the Antarctic showing several small stretches of coastline, labelled ENDERBY'S LAND 1831, KEMPS LAND 1833, ADELAIDE LAND, SOUTH VICTORIA LAND with note Perpendicular Barriers of ice Capt. Ross 1841, GRAHAM'S LAND Biscoe 1843, Durvill 1838 and Compact Ice, the continents with nation states hand-outlined in green, light and dark blue, red and orange and showing towns, cities, rivers, mountains and deserts, finely detailed with numerous notes including the locations of various wells, oases and mines in Africa, Central Africa largely blank but elsewhere with notes such as a river Discovered by M. D'ARNAUD and TRIBES OF BUSHMEN in South Africa, China showing the Great Wall, Australia labelled as such and showing Discovered by Nuyts 1627 in south-western Australia, Tasmania labelled VAN DIEMAN'S LAND, the islands of New Zealand labelled NEW ULSTER, NEW MUNSTER and LEINSTER, this latter with STEWARTS L. faintly beneath, North America finely detailed with notes such as Salt & Sulphur Sp.s, Rapids, Lesser Slave I.s and Winnipigoos, Alaska labelled RUSSIAN AMERICA, the northern coast of Canada with Investigator frozen from Sep.t 1851 to Ap.1853, north-eastern Siberia with a note in the ocean Mountains seen from Jakan;
the celestial NEWTON'S NEW CELESTIAL GLOBE On which all the Fixed Stars, Nebulae and Clusters contained in the Catalogues of Flamsteed, Bayer, La Caille, Piazzi, Hevelius, Mayer, Sirs W. & J. Herschel, Dunlop & Messier are laid down; together with the additional Stars noticed in the recent Catalogue of the British Association: the positions of the whole having been recalculated for the Year 1850 by M.r W. Newton. Manufactured by NEWTON & SON. Chancery Lane., the gores laid to the celestial poles, the equatorial graduated in hours and degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils, the solstitial and equinoctial colures graduated in degrees, the stars shown to nine orders of magnitude with nebulae, a note beneath the table reading NB. The Catalogues from which the stars on this GLOBE have been laid down are thus indicated: -- Bayer (Greek & Roman letters) Flamsteed (19); La Caille (54); Piazzi (89); Hevelius (12) Mayer (31) and the stars without reference are from the catalogue of the British Association._ The authorities for the nebulae are Sir W. Herschel (288III) eight classes; Sir J. Herschel (492); Dunlop below 30° South dec. (564) and Messier (67), the constellations finely engraved and depicted by mythical figures, beasts and scientific instruments (some small, old, neat repairs to both spheres);
both spheres with engraved brass hour dials at each pole, graduated in hours in two directions, with stamped brass meridian circle graduated in four quadrants on one side, the papered horizon ring with degrees of amplitude and azimuth, compass directions, star chart showing the apparent path of the sun along ecliptic with days of the houses of the Zodiac, names and sigils, and days of the month with names and the equation of time (terrestrial with neat repairs, celestial horizon a copy, with no degrees for amplitude but signed NEWTON AND SON Chancery Lane, London); with brass roller meridian supports, each on a gadrooned and leaf-wrapped shaft, with tripartite base with leaf-wrapped scrolled legs, the legs joined by the original paper compass signed NEWTON AND SON Chancery Lane, London, with blued-iron needle with brass cap and glazed cover
