Details
The internationally-renowned viticulturist Dr Richard Smart conceived the Genesis Wine Project selecting a vineyard location near Bourke in the Australian outback (750km north west of Sydney) as the most suitable site for the production of the first wine of 2000. Planning for the production of this wine began as early as 1997 when the site was first selected and subsequently planted. A crop of naturally ripened Chardonnay grapes was picked by the light of miners' helmets on January 1 2000 immediately following the strike of midnight. The grapes and fermenting must were then transferred to the Andrew Harris Winery at Mudgee for crushing and were then fermented in small vats and French oak barrels. The wine represents the tangible expression of the end of one millennium and the beginning of the next.

Frank Newman, winemaker at Andrew Harris Winery has taken every care to produce a fresh and zesty wine - typically Chardonnay and Australian in style.

The First Light Australis Wine Company, responsible for the venture, realizes that the first 5 numbered magnums will generate a premium and they have therefore decided to donate the proceeds from their sale to charity. Christie's International Wine Department will auction all five magnums. Magnums one to three will be sold in London on 8 June 2000, magnum number 4 will be offered in this sale and magnum number 5 will be sold in Tokyo on 2nd November 2000.

Further details about this unique project can be found at the Genesis Chardonnay website: www.firstlightwine.com.au

The Charity: Magnum number 4: sale proceeds will be donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia.
