Collation: [112 2-2210 23-246 25-3610 37-386 39-4110 42-438 44-4810 496] (1/1r blank, 1/1v table, 1/2r prologues to Genesis, 1/5r Genesis, 25/1r Proverbs, 39/1r prologue to the Gospels, 39/1v Matthew, 48/10v colophon, 49/1r Menardus). 467 (of 468, lacking 36/1) leaves; fos. 2/9,10 misbound before 2/1. 49-53 lines and headline, double column, printed shoulder notes. Type: 4:160G, 3:110aG. First text page illuminated in gold and colours by a contemporary south-German artist, 14-line initial in gold on blue ground within frame of alternating pink and green staves, central gold stem terminating in floral and foliate extension, book initials in interlocking red and blue with contrasting penwork decoration, 3- to 4-line initials in red or blue. (First leaf torn at margins, soiled and mounted, first leaf soiled, illumination rubbed, lower corner repaired, waterstained with resultant fading or leeching of rubrication and weakening of paper at centre of many leaves, holes with loss in about 50 leaves, some crudely repaired, other marginal paper repairs.) 19th-century maroon morocco, title lettered in gilt on spine (edges partly blackened). Provenance: Schönthal, Cistercian abbey (inscription on first leaf, early marginal annotations washed).
