BOCCACCIO, Giovanni (1313-1375). Cento novella [...] hundert newer Historien. Strassburg: Hans Knoblouch, 1551.

2° (283 x 180mm). Woodcut title vignette. Gothic type. 66 full-page-width woodcut illustrations, many composed of 2 blocks, 3 coloured by an early hand. (Unobtrusive light spotting, browning and dampstaining, small wormhole in first quire, hand-colouring partially oxidised, coloured illustrations lightly offset, J3 and P3 with minor paper flaws affecting text/illustration, small hole in k6 affecting 3 words.) 19th-century crushed brown morocco gilt, double gilt fillet borders on boards, spine gilt in compartments, titled in one, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (corners lightly rubbed, a few scuff marks on sides). Provenance: occasional marginal marks and underlinings in an early hand.

The present edition appears to be a reprint of Knoblouch's 1547 German edition of Il Decameron, with a similar collation to the copy described by Jacques Rosenthal (Kataloge 66-70 Illustrierte Bücher des 15. bis 19. Jahrhunderts (Munich: [no date]), item 219). Rosenthal, who notes that the 1547 edition is 'ausserordentlich selten', adds that the book is illustrated with 'sehr merkwürdigen Holzschnitten'. Adams B-2165.
