Caeremoniale episcoporum iussu Clementis VIII...novissime reformatum. Rome: Typographia Linguarum Externarum, 1600.
2° (378 x 255mm). Printed in red and black, title within engraved border by F. Villamena, 71 engravings in the text, one full-page, a few examples of woodcut music printed on 4 staves. (Fore-margins at beginning and end browned causing some loss, title mounted.) Contemporary Roman red morocco by the 'Borghese Bindery', tooled in gilt and blind, sides with arms of Cardinal Bartolommeo Cesi in lozenge within shaped panel, decorated with a variety of humanoid ornaments, including a bearded human-faced lion, gilt ornament in spine compartments, gilt edges (repairs at spine and corners). Provenance: Cardinal Bartolommeo Cesi (binding); Sir John Smith, Bart. (bookplate).
In addition to various members of the Borghese family, from whose commissions the bindery derives its name, the 'Borghese bindery' counted many cardinals and popes among its patrons. The number of small, many fanciful, tools used by the shop allowed for great variety and imagination in its work. The present binding shares the ¾ human figure, winged cherub head, and scrolls bordering the armorial with lot 232. BLSTC Italian II, p.262.
