2 parts in one volume, 4° (234 x 169mm). Engraved monogram device on titles, title of vol.I ruled in red. (Part I title repaired at head with no loss of title.) Diced russia by ROGER PAYNE, sides panelled in gilt (sympathetically rebacked, corners repaired), gilt edges. Provenance: Michael Wodhull (his notes on endpaper recording his purchase of the book at Fletcher's sale, 17 November 1783, the price of the volume, and the price of the binding and mending by Roger Payne and recording other copies having been sold at other sales).
FIRST EDITION of Collius's rare second work in which the author discusses the possible salvation of a whole host of people from the Bible or antiquity. Those mentioned in Scripture are largely given a favourable review, but most of the pagan philosophers, including Pythagoras and Aristotle are rejected. Brunet II, 158 'Cette édition originale est rare'.
