Contemporary French straight-grained red morocco, wavy leafy border, interspersed with stars on sides, at centre arms of Napoleon [fer not in Olivier, but very similiar to Olivier 2652, fer 7, and probably the variant of it described there], flat spine elegantly gilt with green leather label, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (lightly spotted, single small wormhole in rear joint). Provenance: Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821, binding); James Harris, first Earl of Malmesbury (inscription on flyleaf: 'this book belong'd to Buonaparte's Library at la Malmaison - it was given me by my sister Robinson on her return from Paris on the 12th Decr 1815. Malmesbury'.
Talleyrand described the first Earl of Malmesbury as 'le plus habile Ministre que vous aviez de son temps'.
