HORAE -- Officium Beatae Mariae. Antwerp: Balthasar Moretus at the Plantin Press, 1622.

4° (237 x 179mm). Printed in red and black. Engraved title vignette, 57 full-page engravings and 37 engraved tailpieces. Pages ruled in red. CONTEMPORARY PARISIAN GOLD-TOOLED RED MOROCCO BY MACé RUETTE. sides with olive morocco lozenge in-laid at centre, triangular olive morocco inlays at corners, bordered with rolls, extensively tooled with pointillé spirals and dots, heightened with painted silver, flat spine similarly decorated with tan morocco in-lays, gilt edges, pink, green and silver headbands (slight wear at hinges and corners). Provenance: Sotheby's sale, 14 June 1955, lot 271, £185 to Foyle.

An interesting and unusual design from an important Parisian shop. Two tools, a spiral and a tulip, and the outermost border role almost certainly are from the atelier of Macé Ruette (1584-1638). He was apprenticed to Dominique Salis in 1598, opened his own shop in 1606, and from 1629 to 1634 he was 'administrateur de la Confrèrie des libraires'. At the death of Clovis Eve in 1634 he was appointed 'relieur du Roi'.
