JACOBUS DE VORAGINE (c.1230-1298). Legenda aurea. - USARDUS (d. c. 875). Martyrologium. Cologne: Johann Koelhoff, the Elder, 22 July 1490.

Type: 18:290G, 15:175bG, 17:86G, 16:80G. 2- to 4-line initial spaces, some with printed guide-letter. (Marginal repair to title and final leaf, lower blank section of 2a1 [title of Martyrologium] renewed, just touching text, occasional dampstain in upper margin, some light browning, paper flaw on z3 amateurishly repaired.) Early 20th-century citron sheep, spine lettered in gilt, early vellum endleaves preserved (upper cover scuffed). Provenance: William Cusshyn (possibly William Cusschon, Corpus Christi College fellow 1488-1492, inscription on rear vellum flyleaf); William Forster, sub-prior of the Collegiate church of Holy Trinity at Arundel (inscription on h7v dated 1531, marginal annotations, not in the inventory of 95 books belonging to the College of the Holy Trinity which was made on 1 October 1517 [cf. W.H. St John Hope, in Archaeologia, lxi, 1908, pp.82-96]); J. Bailey (flyleaf inscription dated 20 Feb. 1823).

Interestingly, this edition of the popular collection of saints' lives by Jacobus de Voragine appears to have been well-marketed in England. The present copy bears the inscription of William Cushing, probably the one who died only 3 years after the book's publication; the British Library copy also bears contemporary English inscriptions. The colophon is dated 'in vigilia sanctissimorum trium Regum', interpreted by A. Labarre as 22 July, correcting previous interpretations of 5 January (cf. Gutenberg-Jahrbuch 1975, pp.77-80). C 6465 (Voragine only); HCR (Usardus only) 16111; BMC I, 229 (IB. 3615); CIBN J-96; Goff J-123.
