2° (361 x 241mm). Printed in red and black, printed music. Engraved title vignette of the Archbishop of Milan, 4 full-page woodcuts and numerous smaller woodcuts, woodcut headpieces and initials. (Some browning and light spotting.) CONTEMPORARY ROMAN CRIMSON MOROCCO, BOUND BY THE BORGHESE BINDERY FOR POPE CLEMENT VIII, sides panelled with gilt and blind fillets, central arms of Ippolito Aldobrandini as Pope Clement VIII, corners built up with leafy spirals, cherubs, statued pillars and stars (echoing the Aldobrandini arms), spine tooled with ?papal canopy ornaments and stars, gilt edges, without two fore-edge ties (discreet repairs at corners, very slightly rubbed, spine with a few wormholes and slight wear at foot). Provenance: Ippolito Aldobrandini, Pope Clement VIII (1536-1605, pope 1592, binding); Mortimer Schiff (sale Sotheby's, 24 March 1938, lot 318).
A handsome example of the work of the 'Borghese' bindery. It shares tools with another binding executed for Pope Clement VIII, reproduced by Schunke, plate V. She identified that binding as the work of the 'Meister der Visierkartusche', a shop which Foot has subsequently amalgamated into the Borghese bindery. Cf. I.
