PETRUS, Magister. Canonis Missae interpretatio. Salamanca: [Printer of Nebrissensis, 'Gramática'], 29 October 1499.
Chancery 4° (200 x 137mm). Collation: a-b8 c16 d-z8 \\i8 A8 B4 (a1r title, a1v blank, a2r text, A3v tabula, B4r colophon, B4v blank). 212 leaves. 35 lines. Type: 3:150G (title), 2:120G (text of Canon), 1:91G. Woodcut white-on-black initials in several sizes. (First and last leaves lightly browned.) 20th-century blue morocco, title lettered in gilt on spine, gilt edges, by Rivière and Son (short split at upper hinge). Provenance: contemporary marginal annotations (partly shaved); William Robinson (bookseller, catalogue description tipped in).
The beginning of printing at Salamanca is characterised by over 100 unassigned books, which appear to represent the output of two printing shops. The present edition belongs to the second group, active by 1492, which, despite its anonymity, was one of the most productive on the Iberian peninsula. The Canonis Missae interpretatio has been attributed, unhappily, to Petrus de Costana and to Petrus Comestor, and recent bibliographies (CIBN) have returned to using the author's own identification as 'Petrus Magister' pending further investigation. CR 4070; BMC X, 52 (IA. 52845); CIBN P-204; Haebler (BI) I and II, 545; Vindel II, p.164, no.107; Goff C-950.
