PLENARIUM, in German: Das ewangelibuch. Augsburg: Johann Schönsperger, 9 December 1500.
Chancery 2° (260 x 185mm). Collation: a-z A6.8 B6 C-D8 E10 (a1r title, a1v full-page woodcut, a2r text, E9v colophon, E10 blank). 199 (of 200, without final blank) leaves. 39 lines and headline, double column. Type: 4:150G, 6:105G. One full-page woodcut and 58 column-width woodcuts, ALL COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY GERMAN HAND, Maiblumen initials, the first also with contemporary colouring. (Browning, some staining, occasional spotting, expert repairs in 5 leaves with a few letters replaced in b6.) 20th-century half blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, spine lettered in gilt. Provenance: C.W. Dyson Perrins (bookplate pasted over by Foyle's, sale Sotheby's, 11 March 1947, lot 680, £110 to Breslauer).
VERY RARE; ONE OF ONLY TWO COPIES KNOWN of the third Schönsperger edition. The woodcuts were previously used to illustrate Schönsperger's 1489 edition (with 3 cuts replaced by copies), which were in turn close copies of the series used by Zainer c.1473. The present copy is reputedly that recorded by Reichling (known through Ludwig Rosenthal's catalogue CV, no.281). It and a copy in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek are the only copies recorded; the edition is not listed in ISTC. The colophon here reads 'Augspurg', as the BSB copy. BSB P-598; R 504; Pietsch J6; Schreiber 4980 (mistakenly calling for 59 cuts).
