SALVIANO, Hippolito (1514-1572). Aquatilium animalium historiae, liber primus. Rome: the author, 'M.D.LIIII' [colophon dated January 1558].
2° (393 x 254mm). Engraved title with portrait of Salviano within an architectural frame decorated with marine motifs, surmounted by the arms of Marcello Cervini, the proposed dedicatee. 81 full-page engraved illustrations [?by Antoine Lafréry, cf. Brunet], 36 as plates, those on O8v, R2r, V4v and AA8v with letterpress cancel slips pasted over engraved titles. Woodcut initials, publisher's device on II8v [cf. Vaccaro p.203]. (Some light spotting and browning, occasional marking, some plates trimmed touching platemark, a few leaves reinforced at the gutter or guarded, unobtrusive skilful repairs on title, some leaves with skilfully repaired worming or tears, mainly marginal.) (?)18th-century vellum, spine titled in gilt on coloured ground (slightly marked, a few unobtrusive wormholes, light wear on lower corners and foot of spine). Provenance: early manuscript note at foot of BB6v.
'AN IMPORTANT, EARLY AND WELL-ILLUSTRATED TREATISE ON FISHES' (Wood), [?]first edition, third issue. Brunet identifies 3 issues of this 'ouvrage bien exécuté, et qui est assez estimé, malgré les immenses progrès que l'ichthyologie a faits depuis le XVIe siècle': the first without the colophon leaf II8, the second with the colophon leaf, dated October 1557, and the third with the colophon leaf dated January 1558 (as here). Despite these variations of date, Brunet held that these were all issues of one edition, rather than separate editions, while Mortimer cites the 'additions, changes on the plate, and cancel slips set in type and pasted over the engraved labels', as evidence that the plates were prepared for 'an earlier, uncompleted, edition or an earlier arrangement within this edition', postponed by the death of Salvianius's patron Cervini in 1555, and further suggests that the edition was 'probably completed in 1557 rather than 1554'. This copy conforms most closely to the second Harvard copy, with the signature on +4 corrected in manuscript, no manuscript signing of T4 or BB4, and GG3 correctly signed.
