4° (200 x 166mm). Half-title, leaf of instructions to the binder. Engraved additional title, 45 engraved plates, 6 folding, woodcut device on verso of title, woodcut illustrations, head- and tailpieces, and initials, letterpress music. (Additional title slightly wormed, repaired on verso and trimmed with minor loss at foot, light browning and dampstaining, some worming, a few plates trimmed within platemark, short repaired tears on folds of 2 plates, one folding plate torn and laid down.) Contemporary calf, double-fillet blind-stamped borders on boards, modern gilt morocco lettering-piece (lightly rubbed and scuffed, slight cracking on joints, a few wormholes on spine, neatly rebacked retaining original spine, endpapers replaced). Provenance: early emendations to a few plate numbers in an early hand; Gilbert R. Redgrave, London, 1910 (extensive inscription on front free endpaper).
FIRST EDITION. The present work had originally been 'intended as a brief guide to the hydraulic and pneumatic instruments in Kirchner's Roman museum' (DSB XII, p.210); however, as Norman notes, 'the appendix to Schott's work [the Experimentum novum Magdeburgicum ..., pp.441-488] contains the first published report of Guericke's experiments with the vacuum pump. Guericke had communicated the results of his experiments to Schott in 1657, but did not publish his own account until 1672 [ ... as Experimenta nova (ut vocantur Magdeburgica de vacuo spatio]. The success of Mechanica hydraulico-pneumatica caused Schott to become the centre of a network of correspondence from both Jesuit and lay scientists, who wrote to inform him of their inventions and discoveries; this material formed the basis of Schott's later publications'.
