Details
STELLA, Antonio. Elogia Venetorum navali pugna illustrium. Venice: Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1558.

8° (151 x 93mm). Small woodcut device on title. (Light spotting.) 18th-century Italian red morocco, narrow roll-border round sides composed of dots and a flower tool, enclosing the arms of Marco Foscarini, Doge of Venice, spine gilt in compartments with a large acorn tool in each, gilt edges (foot of spine chipped, corners rubbed, small wormhole in spine). Provenance: Doge Marco Foscarini (1696-1763, Doge of Venice 1762-63, binding).

FIRST EDITION of Stella's short biographies of forty-four Venetian admirals between 697 and 1508. Much of the narrative is devoted to the interminable wars and battles between Venice and the Eastern Empire; but some of the later biographies are concerned with naval warfare against the Turks. Marco Foscarini devoted his life to serving the Republic of Venice, becoming doge only for the last ten months of his life. Unfortunately his official duties prevented him from finishing his excellent work, Della letteratura veneziana, the first part of which appeared in 1752. Adams S-1694; Cicogna 2519.
Special notice
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
