THOMAS À BECKET, Saint (?1118-1170) -- Historea da vida e martyrio do glorioso sancto Thomas arcebispo, senhor de Cantuaria ... treladada novamente de Latim em lingoagé Portugues. Translated by Diego Alfonso de Miranda. Coimbra: João Alvarez, 12 November 1554.

4° (195 x 135mm). Gothic type. Woodcut initials. (Some browning and dampstaining, some repaired flaws, tears or wormholes affecting text, title and first 3 leaves supplied in neat manuscript facsimile.) 20th-century Portuguese tree calf, spine gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-piece (extremities very lightly rubbed). Provenance: occasional early annotations in Portuguese; Condes de Azevedo e de Samodães (Casa de Azevedo inkstamp on margin of A1r, lot 40 in the Azevedo sale, Lisbon 1921, with description tipped onto front free endpaper, describing the facsimile leaves as 'habil e exactissimamente desenhades').

THE AZEVEDO-SAMODAES COPY of a work described by dos Santos as 'Estimada. Rarissima' and Pinto de Mattos as a 'livro bastante raro e estimado'. The present title was 'compiled from biographies by Alan of Tewkesbury, Herbert of Bosham, & John of Salisbury' (Adams), and was the second book published by Alvarez alone, after his partnership with João de Barreira ended in 1553. As Barreira's partner, Alvarez was co-printer of the third book published in Coimbra (Azpilcueta's Praelectiones ..., 1543). The Azevedo-Samoães collection, catalogued by José dos Santos and sold at auction in Lisbon in 1921, was renowned as 'one of the best collections of Portuguese books [...] the cataloguing was the work of José dos Santos and is very accurate' (Borba de Moraes, p.973). Adams B-439; Anselmo 60; BLSTC Spanish, Spanish-American and Portuguese, p.145; Manuel II, 298; Pinto de Mattos p.4.
