2° (247 x 189mm). Collation: \Kp\kA4 A8 B4 D-E8 F-Q6 R8 S-V6. 183 leaves (of 190, without first and final blanks and with A2-4 and V4-5 in facsimile). 42 lines, double column and long lines. Woodcut ornament and lombard initials. (Repaired tears into text in O1-2 and R2, very small hole in text in V2, a few marginal repairs, small hole in E4 owing to erasure of 'pope', washed and pressed.) Brown morocco by Francis Bedford elaborately tooled in blind, reminiscent of the early 16th century, spine lettered in gilt, gilt edges. Provenance: Lord Cunliffe (sale Sotheby's, 13 May 1946, lot 11, £40 to Sawyer).
FIRST EDITION, INCLUDING THE FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT OF 'THE BALLAD OF THE NUT-BROWN MAID'. The fidelity of the 'nut-brown maid' is tested by her lover, who tells her that he has been banished to the greenwood to live the life of an outlaw. She declares that she will accompany him, despite the many hardships ahead, but is saved from her fate by his revelation that he is in fact an earl's son. It ends with the admonition: 'Here may ye see that wymen be in love meke, kind & stable Late never man repreve them than or calle them variable'. Curiously, it appears in the middle (N6r-O2v) of this miscellany which contains lists of officers of London, oaths of civic office, charters, and information necessary to commerce in the city, such as tables of coins and weights. Its recipes for gunpowder and instructions for grafting added to its usefulness in a wide range of areas. Pforzheimer 11; STC 782.
