BALE, John (1495-1563). The Pageant of Popes contayning the lyues of all the Bishops of Rome. Translated into English by John Studley (1545?-1590?). London: Thomas Marshe, 1574.
One volume extended to 2, 4° in 8's (182 x 126mm). Black letter with some roman and italic. With final blank. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with an engraved portrait of the author, engraved frontispiece to each volume and approximately 95 engraved plates in several series from the 17th century. (Title laid down, and with small piece lacking from lower inner corner, repair to 08 and a few other leaves, occasional soiling.) Early 19th-century straight-grained crimson morocco, panelled in gilt and blind with an acorn pattern on sides, g.e. Provenance: A few early annotations; index to the plates at the end of each volume in an early 19th-century hand, and several 19th-century inscriptions.
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of Bale's Acta Romanorum pontificum, originally published in Basle, 1558. The translator, John Studley, was one of the original scholars of Westminster School, and the first to be elected to Cambridge. Pennar Davies John Bale 32; STC 1304. (2)
