4° (190 x 125mm). Black letter. Woodcut title ornament of a woman's head between two cornucopias [McKerrow 193]. Woodcut floreated opening initial and tailpiece. (Title soiled and repaired.) Red morocco gilt by Rivière, covers with central arabesque enclosed by a double panel, spine gilt-lettered, gilt edges. Provenance: Richard Monckton Milnes, Lord Houghton (1809-1885, Crewe Hall bookplate removed from an earlier binding).
FIRST OF TWO EDITIONS issued by Barker in 1583. This call for greater 'justice' by Elizabeth's chief minister was directed 'against certeine stirrers of sedition, and adherents to the traytors and enemies of the realme.' Translations in Latin, French and Italian followed in 1584, and R. Schilders brought out a Dutch edition at Middelburgh in the same year. Burghley was to be largely responsible for the execution of Mary Queen of Scots in 1587.
