2° (334 x 205mm). Woodcut title border composed of 4 blocks, at the bottom two sphinx with a bull and lion to the right and left. Woodcut of the crucifixion in a frame of 4 blocks on a8v, the bottom panel representing the last supper. Woodcut ornamental initials. (Washed, title restored at margins, short at lower margin and probably supplied from another copy, b4 slightly torn at upper margin.) Brown morocco by Rivière, upper cover with title in gilt and bust of the author stamped in relief, gilt spine, gilt edges. Provenance: Antony de Leuatis (early signature on title).
This reply to Luther was first published at Antwerp in 1523. The woodcuts in this Venice edition are taken from the Missale Romanum which Gregoriis issued in 1513. Fisher, who became chancellor of Cambridge university and bishop of Rochester in 1504, published three treatises against Luther in the 1520s, in the same period that he brought Erasmus to Cambridge. Imprisoned with Thomas More for refusing to swear to the Act of Succession, he was beheaded just two weeks before him on 22 June 1535, after failing to acknowledge Henry VIII as head of the church.
