GAEBELKHOVER, Osswalt (1538-1616). The Boock of Physicke. Dordrecht: Isaack Caen, 1599.

(Title cut down at margins and mounted, dedication leaf and D1 repaired at lower margin, I5 with small hole, N4v and N5r soiled at upper margin, Q3v with large ink stain, occasional browning, some heavy stains to margins of index and end leaves, final leaf frayed.) Late 19th-century speckled calf by M.M. Holloway, covers with gilt-stamped arabesque enclosed by rules, gilt spine panels with red morocco lettering-piece, gilt turn-ins, red speckled edges. Provenance: Contemporary marginal note (on M5r); note of purchase for 'vi s. vi d.' in London, 19 November, 1634 (inscription on old blank preserved at front); Henry H. Gibbs (signature on the same blank, dated St. Dunstans 1860, and note of purchase at the 'Savile Sale').

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION IN ENGLISH of Gaebelkhover's Artzneybuch, first published at Tübingen in 1595. This rare book is the more interesting for the inclusion at the start of a 34pp. index to remedies and treatments, indicating that it was not a scholastic work so much as a do-it-yourself medical guide. The longer first part is the more general, the second deals with the diseases of women and young children, the third with 'agues,' and the fourth with the treatment of wounds. The title page states that the book was 'faithfullye translated out of High-duche by the right worshipfull Mr Doctour Charles Battus ... and now newly translated into Englishe by A.M.' NLM/Durling 1737; Wellcome I, 2488; STC 11513.
