4° in 8's (181 x 135mm). Double column, printed in red and black, with English text in gothic letter in the left hand column and Latin text in roman on the right. Woodcut Prince of Wales feathers within architectural border on C4r. Woodcut historiated initials. (Title, Calendar, Almanac, e6, h2 and colophon leaf all in pen-and-ink facsimile, many other leaves remargined or otherwise restored, loss of letters on g2v, minor loss on h8, o4 and q4 supplied in facsimile.) Brown morocco by W. Pratt, tooled in blind, spine gilt-lettered, gilt edges. Provenance: Henry Gibbs, later Lord Aldenham (inscription dated 1860 on front blank, pencil inscription 'Bought of Lilly £31,' and bookplate). Exhibited: Tudor Exhibition London, 1889-90, no. 26 (exhibition label on rear pastedown).
The first edition of the Primer of Henry VIII was published by Grafton on May 29, 1545 [STC 16034]. During this and the following year, the book went through ten editions in English, two in English and Latin, and one in Latin. This is the first diglot edition. Hoskins 179; STC 16040.
