PRIMER, Use of Sarum -- Here after foloweth the Prymer in Englysshe and in Latin sette out alonge: after the use of Sarum. Rouen: [J. Le Prest?] for Robert Valentin, 1555.

8° (160 x 101mm). Gothic letter, printed in red and black. Title with three-quarter page woodcut device of two unicorns supporting the shield of Robert Valentin, the device repeated and verso of final leaf. Full page astrological woodcut on title verso, 25 large woodcuts and 13 smaller vignettes in text, the large cuts signed 'M.I.' and one signed 'Iehan Mallart' on f. xliiij. Criblé and historiated initials. (Title expertly restored at lower margin, occasional skilled restoration of text margins including repairs to A2, filled-in hole at lower margin of N5, and repairs to outer margin of final colophon leaf, K1 with paper fault at lower margin, F1r, F3r and G4r affected by slight crease marks, B4 with short tear, one or two smaller nicks to margins.) Brown morocco gilt by Chambolle-Duru, the sides tooled with strapwork in Grolieresque style, red morocco doublures with similar tooling, gilt edges. Provenance: Harry Vane Milbank (bookplate); C.W. Dyson Perrins (bookplate, sold Sotheby's, 9 June, 1947, lot 801, £60 to Stonehill).

ATTRACTIVELY PRINTED WITH FINE WOODCUTS BY MALLART. There is a hiatus in the text between B8 and C1, i.e. at the end of the 'Preface and the maner to lyve well,' some ninety lines of the 'Preface advertising the reader of certain things contained in this book' being omitted. There is also a hiatus between B7 and 8, the 'ti' of 'times' being omitted. These errors appear to be an oversight of the compositor, and were noted in the Dyson Perrins sale catalogue. Hoskins 219; STC 16070.
