4° (268 x 180mm). Black letter, double column. Woodcut title border with the Queen's arms in top compartment and female figures with olive branches at sides [McKerow and Ferguson 81]. Large and small woodcut initials. (Title rehinged, dedication leaf supplied and with repair at inner magin, second leaf of the second quire with closed tear at lower margin, some old stains and soil marks, 2q8 and S4 with small burn hole affecting text, last leaf soiled, also restored, the loss to numeral on recto and shoulder notes on verso supplied in pen-and-ink facsimile, without final blank.) Late 19th-century brown morocco by Bedford, panelled in gilt and blind, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed).
FIRST EDITION of the collected works in English. It was while living as a Catholic exile in Louvain, during the reign of Edward VI, that William Rastell edited his uncle's English works, arranging the material in chronological order and adding 'the valuable marginal notes.' Cawood printed the first quire which includes the 'table' or index compiled by Thomas Paynell, but it was Tottell who printed the rest of the book. In 1563 Episcopius published the first edition of the Latin works at Basel. Gibson More 73; Pforzheimer 743; STC 18076.
