Thomas CRANMER (1489-1556). A Defence of the True and Catholike Doctrine of the Body and Bloud of...Christ.... [London: Reyner Wolfe, 1550]. 4° (190 x 133mm). Title within a fine woodcut historiated border [McKerrow 73], with a compartment at head representing the Jews eating the Paschal Lamb and one at foot of the Last Supper, a medallion at either side, one of the rain of manna and the other of Moses striking the rock. Woodcut initials. (A few small worm holes in margins towards end, several leaves lightly browned.) Purple morocco gilt by Rivière, gilt edges. Provenance: Michael Tomkinson (bookplate); George Goyder (pencilled signature); John Burns (pencilled inscription 'From the library of John Burns,' sold Sotheby's, 24 April 1944, lot 162, to Maggs for £20).
